In the third century, conflict consumed the once powerful Eastern Han Dynasty of China on all
sides. As imperial family and eunuchs fought for control and provincial warlords turned the
royal treasury into their personal coffers, a young man, Meng-te, sought to build a new world
order. Yet, how does the ambition of one man count in the empire of millions? He had neither
an army nor royal blood. Though wealthy, his resources were limited compared to the Yuan or
Liu families, and his life frequently hung on a thread.
Reviled by his foes as an unprincipled opportunist and praised by his friends as the greatest
leader of all time, the boy Meng-te who would grow up to be a man and leader. History
remember him as Ts'ao Ts'ao, and Kingdom in Flames is the story of the early Three Kingdoms
seen through his keen eyes.
