Es el año 1846 y Francisca, una joven española, huye de un matrimonio impuesto para cruzar de manera incógnita las fronteras del reino de Joseon, el cual prohíbe la entrada de cualquier extranjero. Mientras intenta esparcir su fe y llevar consuelo a los nativos, cae cautiva de la sonrisa de Park Bon-hwa, el hijo de la familia que decidió esconderla en su casa, a las afueras de la antigua Seúl.
