I quickly positioned myself near the ECG machine, watching the readings and reporting any electrical activity. That's when I noticed something. The heart had been transplanted. But it wasn't beating. A weight settled in my stomach. I wasn't the only one who noticed-the tension in the room was suffocating. Every surgeon was focused, waiting, hoping- Then, something happened that made my own heart stop. The patient opened her eyes. Slowly. Deliberately. She stared straight ahead, unfocused yet aware.
