A prince confined to his castle and a thief with a debt to pay meet in an unlikely way.
When William Goldenhart, crown prince to the kingdom of Gladiolus, has a run-in with young thief, Edmund Mooney, he thinks this is his ticket out of the castle. Ever since he can remember, his mother has kept him on a short leash, never allowed to leave the castle on his own. She has always said that she is afraid of what could happen to him. When he learns of a map to the lair of a dragon's nest, he believes this is finally his time to prove to his mother that he is worthy enough for the throne.
Edmund Mooney, a thief with a terrible secret, owes a debt to the thieves' guild. Presley, leader of the guild, took in Edmund and his sister, Iris, when they were young after their mother was killed by the king. Ever since then, he has held a vendetta against the kingdom and its rulers.
On the night of the summer solstice, a banquet is held in the castle. The first time anyone has been allowed to enter since their king disappeared years ago. Thief Edmund is sent to rob the castle of its jewels in an effort to pay off his debt. He goes against his will, unable to disobey his captor.
When the two end up accidentally running into each other while hiding from the castle guards, William tries to convince Edmund to run away with him to slay the dragon and take its riches. He thinks this will finally show his mother he's strong enough to lead his own life, and he believes the jewels will help Edmund pay off his debt.
