Lika Bineary is an intelligent 17 year old girl who questions her abilities to adjust to her surroundings. Her insight on her peers and teen pressures at school has her convinced that life is pointless. When she meets Kayla Marshall, a 62 year old woman who has colon cancer, her perception on how life is worth a second chance becomes a reality. With the help of friends she meets along the way and a boy she admires, Lika seeks compassion and opens up a side of her she has never seen before; the ability to love herself.

Spring Break of my Junior Year in High School, I felt my world implode. My mom was diagnosed with cancer after a routine test done at the hospital. My family was thrown for a loop over the course of the next 14 months, my mom was fortunate to survive the colon cancer and I was fortunate to have some amazing friends, teammates and coaches to help me keep myself afloat when I thought my world was ending. I would not be the person that I am today without help from them, I appreciate them so much (even to this day). They knew when to handle me with care and to when to handle me with less care (mostly telling me to grow up and toughen up). I wrote this as an assignment for my creative writing class (Earning a solid A on it!) and after some hard work to work the "wrinkles" out, I've decided to post a piece of mine and my families 14 months of hell. I really don't think I got most of the filler conversations 100% correct (they happened like four or five years ago). This is probably the most personal piece that I have posted to date, I hope you enjoy!

Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum. It typically develops from benign polyps, which are abnormal growths in the colon's inner lining.

My surgery was last week. Exactly four days ago. The procedure is called a colectomy. Considering the procedure's complexity and the length of the surgery, my recovery feels easy. I was discharged after only two and a half days. I'm feeling tired and sore. Lined up on my kitchen counter are all the medications I need to take to help manage pain and other potential complications. It's a lot of stuff.

I was informed by the doctor that I had an adenocarcinoma in my large intestines. That is a type of cancer that forms in the glandular tissue, which lines certain internal organs and makes and releases substances in the body, such as mucus, digestive juices, and other fluids.
