Familiars are more commonly associated with tales of magic and wonder. They are beings whose sole purpose is to serve and protect their kindred spirit. One of these guardian spirits tries to seek his identity, though he encounters difficulty in the fact that the girl he guards misunderstands his purpose and allows herself to become terrified of him. This is a story about how he tries to remove this fear so that he can finally possess a name of which to call his own. (Yet another bit of proof of the fact that I can't write good summaries...oh well, I hope you find it in your hearts to give this short story a go, regardless :D I'd really appreciate it, thanks anyway).

No one heard the sound except Ms. Curtis, humming low in her garden, whispering to basil and bloodroot like they were kin. "They coming back," she murmured, eyes fogged but not blind. "Not ghosts, not ghouls. Somethin' older." She placed her palms into the dirt and felt it tremble. The wards were thinning. The veil was pulling taut. And this time, the dead weren't coming alone.

Determined to uncover the truth, Lizzie is willing to do anything necessary to protect the people she loves.

His roommate, Jerome promised that if he went, he'd be see the Negro Spirit in action, wielded by older students who'd mastered their craft. But Marquise didn't expect to wind up in a Rhyme Battle, stare down an angry mob, or have his (possibly magic?) hallucinations triggered by the party! Why didn't he just stay in his room?
