Enter Gabrielle Despereaux, a French immigrant who has to find money to provide her pregnant sister with- or else. Desperate and alone, she stumbles into the Newsboys' Lodging House and discovers not only a way to get her money, but true love and what it really means.

Hi, I'm Anna Sullivan, but I mostly just go by Ash Kelly these days. "Why?" You might ask, well, let's just say I'm running away from the past... And the Bulls. Being the sister of Jack Kelly ain't easy, what with him being the leader, and me- well, I haven't decided who I am just yet, but if you choose to read, you'll see me do just that. Brooklyn Kelly, Jack Kelly's little sister, is a performer at Medda's theater. She is dating Ezra Landon, a fellow performer, and has been for about a year. She believes that things are steady between them, and even thinks they will be married within the next few years, until she discovers her boyfriends terrible secret. Filled with grief and sadness, she stops performing for a while, wanting desperately to get away from Ezra. Instead, she busies herself helping her brother and friends prepare for the newsies strike. And that's when she meets the life-changing Spot Conlon. At first, she fears falling in love with him, not wanting to go through the same thing with him that she did with Ezra. But she soon realizes that not every boy is like that, and begins to fall in love with the boy with red suspenders.

What happens if Spot Conlon's daughter shows up to be a Newsie and nobody knows it's her but Spot. How will he break it to her and the guys?

But as time goes on, will they develop feelings for each other? But by the time they do, will it be too late? Will Leslie’s past catch up with her? And will the roughness of the streets threaten to tear her and Spot apart?
