What began as a lost girl without roots became a woman bound to an empire. Nevşah Saadet. The foreigner no one expected. The consort he could not forget. The one history never saw coming. Fatih Sultan Mehmed's most treasured companion, and the woman who would change the course of history forever. "In love and conquest, rules are written by the victors, and legacy remembers only the brave."

Stories told from only one perspective are rarely fair, and never complete. Never judge until you have heard both sides. "You probably believe I'm the bad guy here, don't you? They told you a nice little story about me rebelling against The Good One, and you absorbed every word of it. Took it for granted without even listening to my side of the story. Not that you could do that obviously, I wasn't really available at the time. But things have changed now. And you -yes, you there- will have the honor of hearing it directly from yours truly."

The legions are in tatters, and the Gothic hordes are gathering beyond the mountains . . .  377 AD: Thracia’s legions are few and broken in the wake of the Battle of Ad Salices. But the scattered centuries and cohorts rally in an effort to blockade the Haemus Mountain passes and hold back the relentless attacks of Fritigern’s swelling Gothic armies. These passes must endure until Eastern Emperor Valens and Western Emperor Gratian can muster and bring their Praesental Armies in relief.  Numerius Vitellius Pavo and the men of the XI Claudia return to Constantinople from their brutal Persian sortie to hear widespread tales of Thracia’s plight and the precarious mountain blockades. Each of them knows what is at stake should those passes fall: the heartland of the Eastern Empire would face the wrath of the barbarians and loved ones would be at the mercy of their savage blades. When the Claudia are despatched to aid the effort at the mountains, Pavo can think only of two souls wandering in the jaws of the Gothic threat: his beloved Felicia and his lost half-brother, Dexion. So he and his comrades march at haste, headlong into the storm that awaits them . . .

As someone inspired by history I found myself pulled towards ancient Rome and the Byzantine empire. These two empires hold a certain magnificence that others in my opinion lacked. One need only think of the greatness of Constantinople in its glory days, brass and bronze casting off the sun's light. The city's fountains reflecting the moon and stars, pastel coloured houses dyed in every shade imaginable, people in exotic dress, and the beautiful Hagia Sophia as a testament that God did protect this city. I found myself mesmerised by these Romans, and thus I wrote a poem to try and emulate what I feel about this Golden City...

BOOK 1 - Rusticus' Journey In 395 AD, a young librarian named Rusticus discovers a plot by Theophilus, the powerful Archbishop of Alexandria, to alter sacred Christian texts to support his own theological and political agenda. Faced with an impossible choice, Rusticus must decide whether to stand by and watch as history is rewritten, or risk everything to preserve the original documents. When Theophilus threatens to destroy the original manuscripts of the New Testament, Rusticus and his friend Marcus embark on a dangerous mission to steal and protect them. But their daring heist sets off a chain of events that will force Rusticus to flee for his life, leading him on an epic journey from Alexandria to Constantinople and beyond. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with the fierce and independent Dalilah, who challenges everything he thought he knew about faith, truth, and love. Together, they must navigate political intrigue, religious persecution, and their growing feelings for each other while staying one step ahead of Theophilus's relentless pursuit. As they delve deeper into the ancient texts they're protecting, they uncover troubling discrepancies between the original writings and the doctrine being enforced by the Empire. Their search for truth will bring them face to face with John Chrysostom, one of history's most beloved and controversial church fathers, whose own struggles with orthodoxy mirror their own. A gripping tale of romance, faith, and courage, this historical fiction novel explores the price of truth in a world where power corrupts and questioning doctrine means risking everything. Based on real historical events and figures, it offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in Christian history when the quest for orthodoxy threatened to override the very teachings it sought to preserve.

First of all let me apologize to readers: I have had more than one beginning chapter to this story posted on this site and the chapters have not been posted sequentially. This is because I have been writing the work in a piece-meal fashion, and until yesterday I wasn't sure how to delete superseded items. In coming weeks I'll try and have a more comprehensive and chronological set of chapters in-place. The chapters are in the correct order now and there are no duplicates. Synopsis: Julian is a native of Crete, which in the 16th century was a colony of Venice. After his family is reduced to humble circumstances, at the age of 15 he travels to Venice with nine other young men from his town to become a ward of the trading house of Zorzi, which had had commercial relations with his father. Eventually he joins a mercenary company which is one of the "assets" of the Zorzi family. He takes part in the battles of Pavia (1525), Mohacs (1526), and the first siege of Vienna (1529). At Pavia quite by chance Julian is present when the French King Francis I is captured. At Mohacs, however, the company barely manages to withdraw in the aftermath of a total defeat inflicted by the army of the Ottoman Sultan Sulayman the Great. During the first siege of Vienna Julian, who speaks Turkish, is given a special mission.
