Sixteen year old Ava is no stranger to the odd panic attack. She is used to family and friends being unable to resonate with her experiences, while simultaneously lessening her events and making her feel like she is 'crazy.' In a rural town, not many people are willing to acknowledge Ava, out of fear of decreasing their social status. Ava's parents announce that they are divorcing, leaving Ava feeling further isolated and like she is the 'adult' of the family. Ava expresses how she and her mum have never seen eye to eye. However, when her dad was around, she felt like both parents were balanced out. Once Ava's dad moves out, Ava and her mum clash more than ever. This frustrates Ava and makes her feel isolated at home, as well as at school. She eventually stops attending school in an attempt to deal with what she is experiencing both internally and externally.
