The Story Hopeless takes place five years after Jest's death. Catherine - the Queen of Hearts - is loathed by everyone. Even the king is afraid of her, and they stay in different wings of the palace. But those are some one the least harmful problems in Wonderland. The war between the White and Red Queens of Chess has spread to dozens of other parts the realm. Without the Resilient Heart of the Queen of Hearts, the White Queen can get no leverage in the war. The Red Queen has heard about the heart's power, and also that it was lost a long time ago. She believes she can beat the White Queen. Hatta has gone completely insane, and Haiga and the Dormouse have become frightened of him. Minions of the Red Queen have infiltrated Hearts, searching for Catherine's weaknesses. But there is one person that could save them all. A Knight of the White Queen, determined to do anything to stop the war. One way or another, that Knight will help Catherine become good again.
