What began as a comforting promise, somehow, through years transformed into something that Del knew she couldn't keep. She didn't come to this realization until she fully understood whom she promised to marry. And that was a notorious criminal.
It became more abrute to her when it was said criminal that she'd been assigned to capture.
In a city consumed by chaus, a little girl, Del, had never understood the reasoning why women were not fit to join the military. There was no law against it, it was just an unspoken rule implemented by society. The looks given, whisper said were exactly what made this rule important.
But it became as clear as glass that Del would attend the military.
That is what scored her the spotlight to be selected into the police force. Top of her unit she was offered a job of a detective and officer, but in
undisclosed spaces they referred to her as the governments assassin.
It was the government that had murdered his Mother in the shadows of the night. It was them that took her away.
It was them behind the drunken nights where he'd have to swing one of his fathers saggy arms around his neck as he supported him to his bed. It was them that caused his Father to come home with the stench of piss and alcohol around him like a new perfume.
They stole countless nights from him, nights where he'd spent on his bed running through situation after situation when his Father hadn't returned.
But Elijah had enough, he'd steal something from them, just like they had for him.
Years flow by, and then the two friends find themselves both attempting to prove society, that; a women could be capable of more, and that no matter the power you can't kill whomever you want.
One friend a cunning criminal reeking chaus in their world while the other is fixing said chaus. What could be so harming about a reunion?
