Tanto la épica como la elegía están obsesionadas con la locura erótica: Dido experimenta en su papel público los efectos incapacitantes del amor, que son a la vez lamentados y celebrados por los elegistas amorosos. La didáctica (especialmente las Geórgicas) y los ejercicios horacianos relacionados con la sátira y la epístola ofrecen programas para construir un orden racional en los mundos natural, político y psicológico, pero, en el mejor de los casos, contienen, de forma inquietante, una amenaza omnipresente de confusión y retroceso, y en su mayor parte no alcanzan los austeros estándares de exposición racional establecidos por Lucrecio. Dioniso y lo dionisíaco gozan de una prominencia en la poesía y el arte augustos que va mucho más allá de lo meramente ornamental. La propia persona del emperador Augusto pone a prueba los límites de la categorización racional. Poesía augustea y lo irracional contiene contribuciones de algunos de los principales expertos del período augusto, así como de varios eruditos más jóvenes.
