Tofu was a really fun poem for me. The other day as I walked into my office, I took notice of the different personality-decorations strung up in everyone's individual cubicles and offices. Then I came to mine and noticed that, while austere, it too had its own personal touches. This made me think about why each of us dresses up these spaces. What I came to realize was that these spaces represented a 2nd home for each of us. For those who work the regular forty-hour workweek in a place other than their own home, we usually experience the hours in a basic grey four-walled cubical. By making that cubical unique, we are attempting to claim it by imprinting our own identity within the designated space. Meditating on each individual's representation, even my own, I considered how even if we decorate our given space we all share the same commonality: we all would rather not be here no matter how much we decorate. Then, I concluded that it makes little sense for us to add our own flavor to this space since it only serves to try and soften the dislike we have for being there. As an alternative, I would suggest we embrace this four-cornered hell. Then, we could use that awareness to motivate ourselves into action that will later lead to changes; moving us onto newer and better experiences. Though keep in mind, as Elizabeth Gilbert once shared, "Everything comes with a shit-sandwich" so, wherever we move onto the next one should expect there still to be that sandwich waiting; it all depends on which sandwich are we willing to eat.
