Matěj byl vždy považován za oblíbeného a chytrého kluka. Pod povrchem však bojuje se svými temnými stránkami a už vlastně ani neví, zda jeho život opravdu patří jemu, anebo spíš těm, kteří na něj kladou svá vysoká očekávání. Když potká Terezu, zpočátku ho ani nenapadne, že by v ní mohl najít spřízněnou duši. Je pro jen další obyčejnou, nenápadnou, možná trochu divnou holkou. Tedy dokud si neuvědomí, že dosud nikdy neslyšel její hlas...

Píše se rok 1986. Každý večer přichází do malé růžové kavárny stejný muž. Objedná si espresso, sedne si ke stejnému stolu a beze slova pozoruje noční Vídeň. Nikdo si ho nevšímá Dokud se v okolí nezačnou objevovat mrtví. A zatímco policie hledá odpovědi, jedna mladá servírka si všimne něčeho, co ostatní přehlédli. Rozhodne se odhalit pravdu o muži, který každý večer sedí v růžové kavárně... Ale možná některá tajemství měla zůstat pohřbená.

V temných spodných vrstvách megamesta Black Hollow žije Jax Mercer so svojou mladšou sestrou Lily Mercer obyčajný život medzi neónmi, trhmi a chaosom podzemného mesta. Black Hollow nie je len chudobná štvrť, je to vlastný svet plný hudby, gangov, rooftop života a ľudí, ktorí sa naučili prežiť bez slnka. Keď Jaxa uprostred noci kontaktuje Raven Cross, hlučná a nebezpečne charizmatická bojovníčka z PIT arény, dostane sa k tajným dátam označeným ako PROJECT FLOOD. To, čo spočiatku vyzerá ako obyčajná korporátna operácia, sa mení na desivú pravdu, horné vrstvy mesta plánujú vymazať Black Hollow z existencie. Spolu s technickou géniusku Mia Torres, hackerom Noah Reyes a ďalšími spojencami začína Jax chápať, že boj o prežitie nebude len o úteku... ale o celej budúcnosti ich sveta.
