They work through life together, learning about each other, themselves and building their relationship more and more along the way. After all, it was his chance to offer a less-fortunate child happiness and safety he never received growing up. (A self-indulgent fic with multiple chapters for me to work through some of my own life events, except with a decent parental figure.)
