In the rolling dunes of the Tonga desert, eleven-year-old Bahbee desperately longs to find her father. He was lost in battle when she was young and without him, the family struggles just to eat. As Bahbee grows up fatherless, a young elephant named Wula grows up nearby without his mother. Kidnapped at birth, Wula is forced into servitude on an extravagant compound just outside Bahbee's village. They are connected and Wula even unwittingly saves Bahbee from an sadistic village custom. But they won't know the other exists until a terrible and tragic encounter that will leave them both scarred for life.
