His boss allowed him to investigate the block of ice to see how long the man had been frozen for, and that is exactly what Stiles does. After this, he manages to thaw out and melt the ice surrounding the man that Stiles assumed to be dead, but was proven wrong, much to Stiles' shock. He can't believe it.
