Jack McGray was a young soldier deeply in love with Gertrude Smith. Before he left to fight in the war, they married in a small ceremony, promising each other that no matter what happened, they would find their way back to each other. While Jack is away fighting, Gertrude writes letters to him-letters full of hope, love, and dreams about the life they will build when the war ends. But tragedy strikes before Jack can return home. Gertrude dies during the war. When Jack finally returns after the war, the woman he fought so hard to come back to is gone. The house they dreamed of building together never exists.

This is a short story experiment, using this story to improve my writing. Adams' eyes are in a daze, with a single drop of blood spilling from the corner of his mouth. I hear ringing in my ears, my body lunging toward him. A pair of hands clutches and holds my body back, pulling me away. The ringing doesn't stop, any remaining strength I have leaves my body, and my knees buckle under me. My face hits the floor, and my vision blurs. A pair of hands presses my head firmly on the wooden floor, forcing me to stay down. "Play dead; it's the only way," gasping with a shaking breath in my ear. The last thing I see is the life leaving Adam's eyes as the claws release his chest.

He was angry, livid, enraged, and he knew what was expected of him. Lucifer was free, so he was expected to begin the apocalypse. Except... He didn't want to. He wanted to find the bastard servant of nature, who thought she could control his power, and pummel her into the ground. He wanted to find his new children, and didn't that thought sting, children. When God had created the archangels, he'd been jealous, envious of what Death could never do, create life. Looks like he got his wish, he had given life. He could feel the tendrils connecting him to thousands of creatures across the planet, and he couldn't help the way his face split into a peaceful smile. He chuckled lowly, feeling shocked as their abilities got a boost. He frowned as he felt his first children's bodies. They were in a deep sleep, almost like death. His frown deepened as he felt the powerful curse on one of his children. He would break it, he decided, after all he loved his new children, he wasn't God, the Light. But first, the apocalypse.
