Part jazz club, part speakeasy: This pocket of space and time is surrounded by peculiar characters and rumors. It's rumored that a grim reaper owns the bar after tearing down the previous building for its "asymmetry". The catty Blair Witch is rumored to make the strongest drinks under the moon. And a runaway with a mysterious past plays the most enchanting piano during the evenings. Detective Maka Albarn reluctantly takes the case of a woman's murder in a neighboring city. It's prohibition in Death City and conflict simmers beneath the surface. After hitting a wall, a preaching "shadow-in-the-night" leads her to the underground bar, "The Black Room". Set in a world without Meisters or Weapons, magic-less yet still-bizarre Death City meets 1920s prohibition. With everything working against Maka, she and a few new companions jump down into the rabbit hole of madness, ambiguity, and humanity. AN: This fanfic gets published on my ao3 first!

This is a sequel to my previous story, Unforgivable. It might be less confusing if you read the prequel before this. Anyway, in this one, Maka and Soul will be looking for Crona together. While they're looking for Crona, he'll be searching for his estranged mother to settle the score. Maka Albarn wasn’t even that noticeable. Perhaps that’s why he came after her. Although, to be quite frank, he didn’t even threaten her. He lured her in like a trap. Perhaps this was why his jobs took forever. There would be monthly spans before the news shouted, “The Soul Eater Strikes Again!” or “New Victim has been eaten by Soul” or some other stupid thing like that. But Maka never believed that he was a terrible, no good, serial killer. She believed he went after the bad guys, as cute as that sounds. Soul “Eater” Evans the infamous killer who strikes at those when they least expect it. Except there’s a twist. He doesn’t just hunt for the hell of it. No, no. He hunts when he feels a darkness in someone. But that just wasn’t Maka. Soul didn’t have very much of a choice. The threats were always there. The guns were always pointed. Silence. Predict. Strike. As catchy as it was, his partner in crime “Black*Star” never followed the rules. Always yelling about God and shit. When a client wants Maka's soul to be ripped out of her body, can Soul do it?
