Willington is the most advanced city in the world. A symbol of modern society, technology, order, and functionality. A strict dictatorship divides its people into so-called "levels" based on their value. Freedom is a luxury; movement is a privilege. Yet there are people known as levelbreakers who are able to move between the city's strictly divided districts without being detected by the all-seeing AI that controls the entire city. Amber is one of them-a woman who has been an exceptional hacker since childhood. Living on the fringes of society, she struggles with loneliness in this cruel world. She tries to survive even though she has no reason to, and as one of the levelbreakers she stands against the entire city. On the opposite side of the system is Cassian-a corporate slave who spends most of his time locked in a cubicle, doing dirty work and operating on the edge of the law in order to protect a worldwide corporation that holds half the city in its grip. His career is his only hope. But when their paths cross, the foundations of the city of Willington begin to shake, and they become enemies of the dictatorial council. Both of them will have to fight their way through a web of dangerous technology and the roar of jazz to reach the freedom that may be waiting beyond the city's borders.

Diesel robots, water raids, sadistic Pruessian officers, fanatical boxing, and mysterious cats abound.This short story is a prelude and introduction to the retrofuture universe upcoming in my decopunk novel, "Ruby Descent". Chromed and streamlined rocketships, heroic robots, brave revolutionaries, flappers, and plenty of jazz! A blend of early twentieth century eras and possible futures, as well as a coming-of-age story, this is the first complete novel in my retrofuturistic "Family of Earth" series. This decopunk re-telling of Edgar Allan Poe's famous poem 'Annabel Lee' was inspired by vintage science fiction, cyberpunk, and noir. The original story appeared in "Merely This And Nothing More", a collection of 'punked Poe' stories published by Writerpunk Press. The version published here is an expanded story containing previously unreleased scenes.

This decopunk short originally premiered in the #decopunk category for the Oorah anthology, and I was very glad to be a part of it. This is in my Legacy Universe, a tale of decodence, fame and division in victorious Second Reich Germany.

Louis Chu is another Chinese - American writer that shares the same family name as Hing. Those two 'accidentally' meet up and Louis is claiming that he's the same person as Hing even if they don't look alike at all. =GENRE= Surreal; Avant-garde; Art Film; Experimental Film !!!the similarity with the Chinese - American writer Louis Hing Chu that wrote the book 'Eat a Bowl of Tea' is on purpose!!!
