The novel follows the human girl Hagi, the stubborn and grumpy dragon prince Kôryûmaru and the mischievous prince of the firebirds Ennetsujiko as they travel across the country, get caught up in the political squabbles of the courtiers and nobles and stumble upon an old secret, which had been guarded closely by the dragon empress Toyotama for centuries.
