However, there was a shadow looming over their seemingly idyllic family life-a secret that Derek had carried since their arrival in Seattle. It was a secret born out of pain and betrayal, one that had driven a wedge between him and Addison. Years earlier, when they were still living in New York, Derek had discovered that Addison had been involved in an affair. It had been a devastating blow to their marriage, one that left Derek feeling shattered and betrayed. The affair had taken place during a difficult period in their relationship when they were both struggling to balance their demanding careers with their personal life. Unable to cope with the betrayal and the emotional turmoil that followed, Derek had made a difficult decision. He chose to move to Seattle, taking Carson with him, without telling Addison. It was a heart-wrenching move, but he believed it was the best way to protect their daughter from the turmoil of their failing marriage.
