As a child (11), Elias' parents get killed(man that's already dark), he loses hope for life, and the man that killed his parents captures him and uses a potion on him. He gains the ability to create "cracks" (rifts) between dimensions and tangible/intangible realities. He tries to use that ability to escape, but since he never practiced using it, he accidentally rifts to an alternate reality instead of outside the lab , and he can't rift back since in this reality the lab never captured him.
