Beneath an idealized surface, hidden from the casual observer, lies a mysterious complexity of raw emotion and inner turmoil. What's shown clashes with what's truly felt within, creating conflicts and anticipation as the carefully constructed image is peeled away to reveal the often-unseen reality of the heart. This is a collection of poems for him/ her.

Do we have the strength to fight? The clash of passion and despair; loyalty and dishonesty. The perfect slice of life with all it's imperfections, and in serving just the right amount of cliché to satisfy your anticipational cravings. A tale of two best friends, if you must.

Lulu, an attractive woman, set her sights on Stanley, a charming and wealthy bachelor who loves running marathons. To win him over, she volunteered at a marathon, securing a dinner date, and entering a casual relationship. Eventually, she becomes genuinely infatuated with him. Recognizing her social class impediment, and spurred on by Stanley's classmate, Rainbow, Lulu started training to become a runner too. Despite a disastrous first race where she greatly injured herself and found out Stanley didn't care for her, she continued running. In the end, she broke up with Stanley and found intrinsic satisfaction and freedom in running.

For the light-skinned girls shunned by both worlds. This poem is dedicated to social activists such as Zendaya, Thandiwe Newton, and all the "colored girls" working to promote inclusion within our community, especially in the arts industry. As long as I can remember, Black women have always struggled with the ability to coexist with one another between the color lines. Speaking on these issues and working together to rid ourselves of this inner prejudice is the only way to close the gap in our community.

A poem I wrote a few years ago following a breakup I went through, in which I knew nothing could be done to change anything yet I still hoped for some sort of future. Through this misfortune I was very focused on the "what ifs" and "what could have beens" rather than trying to cope, understand, reflect, learn, and move on. This poem focuses on my understanding of the difference between what I feel and what I know. The poem hints at both these aspects throughout, focusing on both moving on and knowing how hard it is.
