This view is strongly countered by the surface forces (army and navy), who would rather have the air assets utilised for more urgent needs of battle on the ground. The fight for 'control of the air' is considered by many in olive-greens and whites, to be a myth created by the airmen. The airplane as a weapon of war has undergone massive transformation in the last one-hundred years; however the doctrine for its employment has remained remarkably stable concerning the need for air superiority. In this regard the application of American airpower in particular has been a victim of its own success, wherein, since Korean War no American ground force has operated without air superiority. It has led some others to assume that they cannot conduct any surface operation unless theater-wide air superiority has been gained. This view was reinforced in operation Desert Storm and operation Allied Force wherein theater-wide air superiority was gained albeit at the cost of overwhelming technical and numerical superiority. So , can a warfighting entity conduct its operations without air superiority, or it would be foolish to do so.
