Directional surveys acquired by Measurement While Drilling (MWD) are subject to many errors that are not easily recognized by traditional Quality Control (QC) procedures. This commonly leads to inaccurate wellbore placement and greater positional uncertainty. Common sources of MWD survey error are inaccurate geomagnetic references, localized distortions in the natural magnetic field, poor instrument calibration, random sensor noise, magnetic mud, and human error. Often times, such errors go unrecognized due to limitations in traditional single-station QC tests. This is a significant problem because wellbore collision avoidance, geological modeling, and reservoir drainage are all greatly affected by wellbore placement accuracy. Fortunately, most sources of MWD error can now easily be identified and corrected through implementation of robust independent survey quality control processes. By using web-based systems to facilitate this process, drillers can benefit from the most powerful quality assurance practices which can be standardized across the industry regardless of service provider or vendor specific technologies.

The Coaching Guide originated in 2018 as part of a campaign to equip our Drilling Superintendents and HSE staff with additional tools and skills for coaching employees in the field. Recognizing the diverse skill sets among supervisors and managers, we aimed to support the development of these skills and provide a reference guide. Since its release, the guide has undergone updates to align with our core values and behaviors. Presently, we distribute these guides to new managers and employees seeking to enhance their people leadership skills. By sharing this, we hope it can serve as an additional resource to empower your own leaders. Safety is personal and it's our job to Actively C.A.R.E. for one another.

This study demonstrates that the procedure reduces the horizontal wellbore position uncertainty by 46% for the study area and more generally from 15 to 50 percent when compared to standard MWD (Measurement While Drilling) survey technology. Furthermore, this method was compared to a typical IFR model created from airborne measurements. A sensitivity analysis was then conducted on several BHA types and lengths, considering different boundary conditions in vertical and horizontal wells. Directional models are found to be reasonably unsensitive to the choice of the effective length because they are based on steady-state computations, but the same cannot be stated for dynamics. This study developed a more robust approach to estimate properly the effective length for lateral vibrations, an essential for BHA resonance. For the baseline scenario, low probabilities of collision imply that extensive use of ranging is required for a successful operation. Positional uncertainty reduction techniques and multiple target intervals can greatly increase the collision probability and reduce the need for ranging. Of importance to increasing the probability of successful interception are techniques that maximize the uncertainty reduction along a single axis (e.g. the vertical plane).

Continuous real-time updating of the bit position is one of the many critical analysis steps that can be automated, driving steering decisions. The practice of accurately predicting bit position and trajectory is a skill that is artfully developed by expert directional drillers over many years. To demonstrate the value of partial automation, a specific example is presented where the continuous calculation of the real-time bit position and its trajectory is fully automated, showing that the analysis and decision-making performed by the automated system is faster and more accurate than performed by human directional drillers.

Once the tasks of laying down casing and drill pipe were completed, the derrick was then lowered and replaced. The crew was cleared to resume drilling ahead. "Yeah, that was April 19. Then on May 11, we had another one, right across the highway from us. You could chunk a rock at it." Drilling in remote locations - whether in the middle of the ocean, the middle of a rainforest, or the middle of rural Oklahoma - brings its own set of issues when inclement weather takes place. Multiple methods of monitoring exist in the event that systems are unavailable. The Starlink satellite system on all H&P rigs, storm radios, high tech rig phones, and even a basic antenna for local channels all ensure accurate and up to date weather information is available. As the intermediate section was being drilled, the key formation tops were detected as coming in much shallower than the geological prognosis had predicted. As a result of this real-time intelligence, the operator was able to quickly switch to depth-of-cut drilling 100 feet earlier than had been originally planned. This change was key, as the Travis Peak actually came in 95 feet shallow. By quickly reacting to the gamma data, unnecessary bit damage was avoided and a possible extra trip was saved. The roadmaps for additional wells on this pad were then updated with this new information to help ensure there won't be any future surprises. You may think, "Seatbelts? Who doesn't wear a seatbelt?" Unfortunately, 27.5 million Americans admit there are times when they don't. I have a very personal story about our momentary decisions that have lifelong impact. I encourage each and every one of you to Actively C.A.R.E. by being selfish about your safety. The DrillScan software analysis uncovered high friction factors caused by high wellbore tortuosity. Knowing this ahead of time allowed H&P to recommend that the operator lower the doglegs in the curve from 10 deg/100 to 8 deg/100. While drilling, the Bit Guidance System collected data to make more efficient sliding decisions that were autonomously executed using AutoSlide technology. Wells 3 and 4, drilled using H&P's integrated solutions, reduced the average bottom drilling hours from 196 to 139 hours compared to the manually operated wells 1 and 2 - resulting in a savings of 57 hours. ADIPEC is one of the largest and most prestigious events in the oil and gas industry and is a great opportunity to connect with a vast number of our customers and peers around the globe on the incredible strides we are making together. Having been in the drilling business for over a century, we've seen a lot of changes in that time. This legacy we have created provides us with a unique perspective on the evolution of the energy industry and allows us to continue to innovate and lean on technology to propel us into the next frontier. When I think about the conversations taking place even five years ago compared to now, it's clear that we are innovating at a more rapid rate than we've ever seen before. The discussions that occur each year at ADIPEC help to steer the world's energy future and it's an honor to take part in that conversation. Interesting, right? Analysis of low frequency axial drilling dynamics from block velocity input to surface weight on bit (SWOB) or differential pressure outputs, shows significant regional variation. This range in dynamics poses a robustness challenge for automated drilling control systems. Many factors influence drilling dynamics such as pipe stiffness, mud properties, tortuosity, friction, bit design, and BHA geometry. A simple analytic model representing axial drilling dynamics is described and compared to a finite element drilling model and to drilling data. The analytic model shows that axial drilling dynamics may be represented by a first-order transfer function with a time constant dependent on axial stiffness and drillabillity. H&P's FlexDrill is a technology-based tool that automates the detection of and response to a host of downhole conditions. With FlexDrill technology, wells are able to manage and fine-tune setpoints at a much higher rate than offset wells - automating critical adjustments to WOB, RPM, differential pressure zeroing, and more. These windows are built in accordance with drill bit knowledge or selection along with the downhole motor configuration in conjunction with the elected BHA to optimize the rock removing process. After implementing FlexDrill technology on 15 of the operator's wells, an immediate increase in performance was achieved. Footage per day jumped from 1,296 feet per day to 2,520 feet per day. Average operating time reduced from 4.78 days to just 2.46 days. Savings of 2.32 days and $116,000 on intermediate string operations. The optimized ROP and overall drilling performance achieved made them more competitive in the region.
