It causes him to start making poor choices, and it makes him change as a person. As he gets older and meets new people, he begins to think about who has become over the years and it begins to mess with his mind. It's basically a constant battle against himself, as he tries to figure out who he really is and who he wants to be.

Kakashi is hospitalized after overdosing the night of Obito's birthday. They find out that he had been secretly using drugs as a way to fight off depression. That night he thinks about his life and realizes the effects of his addiction were catching up to him, the regular amounts weren't working and his internal demons were winning. No one expected him to turn down that path, but it had been the only thing that took the pain away. For just a short while he could forget all his mistakes, be blind to the blood staining his hands, but he'd eventually have to come back down and face the mess he was becoming.

Also my Erik is kind of a mixture between almost every version of PotO. Especially the one from Susan Kay's novel, which I totally adore. Also let's pretend the Daroga is not dead.
