Cascades of Fire (23)
The Village Head came to our house with some expensive herbs and concoctions that we could not possibly have at home and these were given to Kehinde to drink but all was to no avail, he was getting very restless and worse.
When it was getting late in the evening, Kehinde's speech had changed and he could no longer recognize us. He was speaking a language we could not understand and was talking to unseen beings.
The aged Village Head was almost crying while Papa stood by the side watching and looking helpless, he had surely heard something bigger than what he knew before the Village Head came.
The Village Head instructed me and another boy, who followed him to our house, to carry Kehinde to the local dispensary in the second village and as bidden, we promptly set out with him in our arms, taking turns to carry him as fast as we could go.
We had almost reached the second village when we heard Mother calling me. She was gasping as she ran to catch up with us. We were almost at the dispensary when she saw us hurrying with Kehinde and she had dropped the luggage she was coming with, leaving the messengers behind to run after her.
I was the one carrying him and as I turned to answer Mother, I felt something leave the body I was carrying.
Right before my eyes, as in right in my arms, Kehinde looked at Mother for the last time and left us for the great beyond.
I was the first person to know he was gone, I saw him come out of the shell we call a body, looking so sad as he left and he never looked back as he walked away. It is sad remembering the way he died, the way his spirit departed from his body. I saw the way he left and I cannot deny what I saw.
