I close my eyes, the sound of rain tapping on the window pane engulfs my ears. My mind is at ease, peaceful. I should stay like this and not turn around, it would be best for me and my family. I know it isn’t the right thing to do but my curiosity gets the best of me. I crack open my eyes and turn towards the window. Heavy drapes cover the view of outside. I reach out towards them, a rush of defiance goes to my head. My hands tremble with excitement as I peek behind the curtains. I gasp in awe of what I see.
The town looks so different with water painting every little piece of it. Water streams down the glass pane, like the tears shed by a little child. The sky is dark and mysterious, with clouds rolling over each other, the color of the night sky. Everything looks so magical, the drops of rain bleeding into one another, creating a glossy coat on the pavement. Why can’t we look? He says it is because there are dangerous and grotesque beasts out there when it rains, but all I see are some worms squirming around to soak up the rare rainfall.
“Drusilla!” My mothers sharp words cuts through my cloudy thoughts. Her voice is high and strained. I let the curtain snap back closed and slowly turn around to face her.
