THE PRICE OF SILENCE
The air in the Whitecombe study smelled of stale brandy and desperation. Viscount, Edmund Whitecombe couldn't look his daughter in the eye. Across from him, the Dowager Duchess of Blackwood Hall, Margaret sat like a marble statue, her silk skirts whispering against the hardwood floor.
"The Duke is a man of vast resources, Elara," Margaret said, her voice like a velvet-covered blade. "He requires a wife of impeccable breeding who understands the value of... discretion. In exchange, your father's unfortunate 'misunderstandings' with the creditors will vanish."
Elara looked at her brother, Arthur, who stood by the window, staring out at the London fog. He said nothing. He wouldn't-he couldn't. Not when his own commissions depended on this union.
"And the Duke?" Elara asked, her voice steady despite the coldness spreading in her chest. "Does he desire a wife, or simply a centerpiece for his table?"
"Tristan desires what is best for the Ravenscroft name," Margaret replied coldly. "You should be honored. Half the debutantes in London would walk through fire for a seat at Blackwood Hall."
"Then let them," Elara whispered, though she knew she had a choice.
"The Gilded Debt" is a dark Regency-era psychological drama set in the 18th century, exploring the high cost of salvation and the volatile power dynamics within the House of Ravenscroft.
The story follows Elara Whitecombe, a woman from a noble family forced into a marriage not of love-but of survival. Bound to the powerful and volatile Duke Tristan Ravenscroft_the "Ice Duke" she becomes the price paid for her father's gambling debts. But beneath the gold and grandeur lies a truth far more dangerous: some debts are not meant to be repaid... and some hearts refuse to be owned.
