Silent Spark is a heartfelt coming-of-age romance woven into the vivid, emotional tapestry of Bengali festivals, traditions, and family bonds. Set against the backdrop of Kolkata during Durga Puja, this story follows Chutki, a spirited yet introspective young woman who returns home for the festivities, only to find herself caught in an unexpected storm of emotions. Amidst sindoor, dhaak beats, and street food adventures, she reconnects with Shaan, her brother's quiet, observant best friend. What begins as playful glances and casual moments slowly builds into something deeper-something unspoken yet unmistakably real. Through Lakshmi Puja preparations, Diwali shopping, rooftop confessions, and tearful goodbyes, Silent Spark captures the thrill of first love, the ache of almosts, and the beauty of stories that don't rush to finish. It's a soft, nostalgic journey through family warmth, the chaos of cousins, and the kind of love that lingers long after the fireworks fade. This is not just a festive romance. It's about timing, distance, and the quiet sparks that change everything.

This is a quintessential Durga Puja story. As a Bengali, I have always wanted to try and write a story centred around the special occasion of Durga Puja, but there never was any particular topic that intrigued me. However, one morning when I was going through the newspaper, I came upon a picture of one of the many artisan workshops in Kumartuli. The image contained an incomplete idol of the revered Goddess. That brought me thinking about the artisans themselves, and how they would feel about their art, not just celebrated but worshipped. Secondly, I had also come across a reel on Instagram, about a very cute child dressed as Maa Kali and eating a lollipop. The image had stuck with me and resonated well with the theme of a story that I was weaving mentally. Thus this story was born. The themes of art and divinity are very close to my heart, and I hope I could convey some of it through this piece. Hope it is worth reading.

Before getting into the details of the celebration of Durga Puja in a traditional way let us look back and find out the tradition of Durga Puja. Ramchandra wanted the blessing of Durga before getting into the war Ravana for rescuing Sita from Lanka. Durga Puja was to be done with 108 blue lotus amongst which Rama could gather only 107. He offered one of his eyes to Durga which looked like a blue lotus. Then the worship started from Saptami and ended up in Dashami when Ravana got killed by Ramchandra's warship was different from the conventional one and henceforth known as Akaal Bodhan. These days Akal bodhan is celebrated as traditional Durga Puja by everybody with a lot of grandura. Durga Puja is most widely celebrated the festival in West Bengal irrespective of social status and religion. Ladies who prefer attires other than sari would prefer wearing sarees for five days of Durga Puja. Now different sarees are required to wear on different days of Puja. The wide range of sarees are available in showrooms and boutiques to cater to different type of people in the state. The demand for dhakai jamdani saree (muslin and cotton) banarasi silk saree and different type of handloom sarees are very high for this festival in our country.
