They told them that the world behind the wall was plagued. They told them that the people there were savages. They told them that danger was bread in the heart of that city. They told them that if they were good, they would never have to go there. Take your medicines. Wear your uniform. Follow their rules. Do not question them. And do not look at the city that lies beyond the Wall of Teeth. But Finley Pryor never thought like they did. She knew she was different, she didn't know how, but she could feel it coursing inside the marrow of her shaky bones. She was curious. She was imaginitve. She was smart. She was Defected. Eighteen year old Finley, a middle class Elysian Citizen, never questioned her role in society or the rule of the Committee. She did what she was told, when she was told, and asked no questions. The threat of being sent to the Cinder, the dark ruins of an old world city beyond the Wall of Teeth, never allowed her to be anything but obedient. Bu when met with an ill decided fate, oppression can last only so long, secrets can be mumbled only so softly and the iron grip of the Committee could only squeeze so tight. How far will Finley go to find righteousness in a world full of irreverence? What tangled webs of defiance will she stumble upon? Will she ever come to know the secrets of The Stranger? And will it be worth braving the ultimate darkness: The Cinder.

"This is illegal! We could be killed," the guard whispered angrily. Her pale green eyes were flaring with fire. "It's a dumb law, anyway. Who says love has gender?" With an exasperated sigh, she said, "The government, clearly. Look, losing my life is not something I'm in extreme favor for." "Okay, fine, I have a solution. Why don't we just... leave?" "What?" The guard looked her down incredulously. "We'll leave this place. Get out of this city, go to the moon. I just want to be free." Her irascible stare softened. With a slight nod, she sat down and stared up at the billions stars. "Okay." •••

Although blackmail and cruelty exist, why would one not go for an easier option? Deception. Kara's plan is simple and effective; she'll find an Authority-- a weak and young one, obviously-- and use them. Deceive them. She'll build their trust, their bonding, and then snip them off like excess string on cheap leggings the moment they become unnecessary. It's a clear-cut agenda, there's no possible chance for her to go wrong. Unless, of course, the impossible occurs-- unless she actually becomes attached. But surely that's impossible. No?

The civilians he rules are almost direct copies of each other; all individuality and differences are lost, for the purpose of ridding his kingdom of any disagreement, hatred, or anger. Sunny longs for a world without oblivious happiness. He longs for a place where people truly feel something. When he travels to one of the realms he has always avoided, he sees what his kingdom "should" be like. He's faced with a difficult decision: does he change his world, subjecting his civilians to reality? Or does he let them live on in peace, knowing that he is deriving them of humanity?

It's amazing how significantly our lives can change in such a short amount of time. Whether it's a fateful meeting with an old friend, a chance event, or an epiphany that seems to materialize from thin air, the lifelong chain of events that follow forever set us on a different path. My life changed in a matter of minutes. The choices I made led me to a life of crime and caused me to become the worst sort of criminal; I became a traitor to the Country of New York. For better or worse, the path my life has taken is irreversible. I've killed, I've died, and I've risked my life in attempt to destroy a society built on over one hundred years of lies and corruption. Though I have regrets, I'm proud of the way I handled things. My name is Jacob Ashton, and this is my story. -------- Absolute Knowledge is the first of a trilogy which takes place in a dark, futuristic New York City set in 2146. The Country of New York is divided into three physical tiers and the faceless Government is working to establish Absolute Knowledge. Working As Thinkers, the citizens of the Slums are paid for their thoughts and given vouchers needed to sustain their cost of living. Since the Government controls almost everything, most citizens are forced to either work as Thinkers or turn to a life of disconnect from society under the harshest of conditions. In Absolute Knowledge, every thought has a price. Coming to print and retail in 2017! http://drewcordell.com
