The ready-made garments (RMG) industry is one of the primary export-oriented manufacturing industrial sectors in Bangladesh. It has transformed the economy of Bangladesh from predominantly based on agriculture to an economy highly based on export-oriented manufacturing (Hossain & Mahmood, 2018). The continuous growth in the apparel industry signifies one of the most important reasons for the economic growth of Bangladesh (Ahlquist & Mosley, 2021). Over the last 3 decades, the RMG in Bangladesh denotes the most important source of generating foreign earnings for the country (Zaman, 2021). Since 2005, Bangladesh has observed over 6% constant growth in annual GDP (The World Bank, 2020). Much of this growth was driven by the exports from the RMG industry, indicating that the industry will potentially continue to expand the economic growth of the country in the future (International Trade Administration, 2019). There are over 5,000 garment factories currently operating in Bangladesh which has created almost 4 million employment opportunities in the fiscal year 2016- 2017. The contribution of export-oriented industries was $40.53 billion in the fiscal year 2019-20 to the overall GDP, while RMG exports have contributed $34.13 billion to Bangladesh's total export earnings (BGMEA, 2020), which shows that the RMG industry exports about 84.2% of the total exports made by the country. In conjunction with this noteworthy contribution to the economy, the RMG industry of Bangladesh also plays a significant role in creating employment opportunities, especially for rural women, nearly 60% of the RMG workers are women which is a great sign for women's empowerment (Abid and Butt, 2017).
