The thirty-second entry of the 2020-2021 Film Journal is "Last Night in Soho". Yet another film delayed by the pandemic, I recount my longtime admiration for the work of this film's co-writer and director, Edgar Wright, as well as my somewhat unusual theatrical experience with this piece. Primarily, I take a deep dive into this frightening film's scary ideas about nostalgia and the patriarchy, which hit a little too close to home.

Sergeant Amber Chamberlin: an exceptional young female officer battling it out on the fields of Britain's most notorious crime hotspots, as well as establishing an effectiveness and popularity among her local community in the suburbs of Hammersmith, London. 'The Running Man is a popular legalised manhunt broadcasted by The Network.' ----- You, (Y/N) Killian, are one of the many Hunters on The Network's most popular brutal game show, 'The Running Man', focusing on chemical deployment as your weapon of choice. This gave you the nickname 'Hazmat'. Purely due to your parentage of having the almighty Dan Killian as your biological father, the show's ratings became increasingly high compared to their other shows. But, amongst the prone-to-poverty audiences and your fellow peers, there is a mystery that swims deep; the truth behind your gender that you keep anonymous due to safety precautions. You were the face of the franchise. Once you have returned from achieving an undergraduate chemistry degree in New York City and came back onto the show after your absence between seasons, you realise that a certain masked man has taken your position as the figurehead. That man was Evan McCone, a former contestant on The Running Man and the only genuine winner, surviving the full thirty days without being exterminated and being rewarded with the billion. Right now, you both feel the same hatred for one another based on personal values and experiences. But halfway through the new season, perspectives change and new feelings erupt.
