After King Tiberias the sixth is murdered by a scarlet guard operative on the night of the sun shooting, rumours start to fly that Elara was behind the attack, to prove herself innocent she steps down from the throne allowing Cal and Evangeline to take the crown. During the coronation tour Cal, Evangeline and her family are involved in a scarlet guard bombing. With Cal and Evangeline assumed dead, Maven and Mare are left to to take the throne.

"All you see is privileged fighting for the throne. Look closer, and you'll see people fighting to ensure their survival, because expendable means dead.
