"Hey...how's El, by the way?" -is mostly how their conversations ended. After this repetitive question, Will gave up on answering the phone and left El to deal with her own boyfriend. He'd also given up on trying to write to Mike, seeing as how he never made any effort to write back or check up on Will. It was always El, El, El, El. So, it was surprising when a letter addressed to Will lands inside their mailbox.
