Prologue: Whispers in the Dark
The rain fell in a steady rhythm, pattering against the stone pathways of Blackthorn University. The campus, ancient and cloaked in ivy, loomed under the dim glow of gas lamps. A mist curled along the cobbled streets, swallowing everything beyond sight.
Evara Lancaster never liked the dark. Not because it scared her-but because it felt familiar.
She walked briskly through the corridors, the silence pressing in. The scent of old books and damp earth filled the air, and the flickering lights cast long, wavering shadows. She told herself it was nothing. Just her imagination playing tricks on her.
Then she heard it.
A whisper. Low, urgent. Her name.
Evara turned sharply, her heart hammering against her ribs. The corridor behind her was empty.
Another whisper. This time, closer.
She spun again-only to collide with a solid chest.
A strong hand gripped her arm. Alistair Vale. His stormy grey eyes bore into hers, unreadable, intense. "You shouldn't be here."
Evara yanked her arm back, breathless. "I was just-"
"Don't argue." His voice was sharper this time, his fingers flexing as though resisting the urge to reach for her again. "They're watching."
A chill ran down her spine. "Who?"
Before he could answer, another voice echoed from the shadows. Smooth. Deep. Amused.
"You always ruin the fun, Alistair."
A figure stepped forward, his presence just as magnetic, just as dangerous. Caspian Devereaux.
Unlike Alistair's cold restraint, Caspian radiated an effortless confidence. His dark eyes held secrets, and the smirk on his lips was both wicked and inviting.
Evara looked between them, something inside her whispering that this night was just the beginning.
The beginning of something forbidden. Something dangerous.
And something she might not survive.
