Maia Cardoso has lived in Quixadá, Brazil, her whole life. She graduated early, at the top of her class, and many out of country colleges had given her scholarships, but she refused each of them, wanting to stay with her family. But one day her city is flooded after a freak hurricane, and she has no choice but to accept a scholarship to Yale University in order to have a place to live.
