JD and Elliot have been alot of things. Friends, lovers, partners, enemies, and even simply coworkers. But after moving in together due to financial struggles(and one too many petty arguments) they find themselves facing their most trying tribulation yet in their career. They have to talk, openly and honestly, about how their feelings. Will they survive? Will they find closure? Or will they ultimately end up 6 feet under? JD especially can't say. But at times he is in fact hoping for the latter.

A new year has taken course at Sacred Heart Hospital. Last year's interns have progressed into residents, and residents into attendings. Most interestingly, however, the latest crop of interns has arrived. As always, they're a cocky bunch, all of them stuck on the naive notion that they can make a difference in the world. And, hell. Maybe one or two of them stand a chance. More likely, however, is the unquestionable fact that the majority of them will, over the course of the next year, get their asses- along with their dreams- handed to them in a trampled cardboard box. In the end, the only ones who stand to make it in the medical world are the ones who get their asses kicked time and time again. The ones who sell their entire life to the hospital, and come out at the end of the year with their soul still in-tact. Edison Cooper has spent the last four years giving her all to medicine. She attended a medical school with cutthroat competition, fought her way to the top of her class, and came out at the end with a free ride to an internship at Sacred Heart Hospital... Which also just so happens to be the hospital where her half-brother, Dr. John Dorian, works as a doctor of internal medicine. Needless to say, it's going to be a long year at Sacred Heart.

Elliot Reid faces an emotional whirlwind when her brother, Frank, makes an unexpected visit to her apartment. Unlike Elliot and their other siblings who followed medical careers, Frank chose a path as a professional wrestler. His visit, however, is not a mere family catch-up. He brings devastating news-their father has died from sudden cardiac arrest. Reeling from the shock, Elliot is forced to confront her strained relationship with her father, a topic she has long avoided.
