Before Pelican Town existed, and long before the valley came to be known as Stardew Valley, sailors occasionally discovered shimmering shells washed ashore after violent storms. As more of these discoveries were made, they began calling them Mermaid Pendants, believing they were blessings bestowed by the sea. The truth, however, is cloaked in tragedy. Every pendant found marks the place where a mermaid disappeared.
