A fragment of a chapter from my unfinished novel, Te'Reshia.
Here we find ourselves on Ethos, a new world, millennia since humanity fled the Sol system. The descendants find themselves in a semi-dark age. Memory of Earth and the journey to this system are largely forgotten. Only shreds of the story remain, making much of it myth and legend.
Technology at the height of the mass exodus nonexistent. Even the cities built after planetfall lay in ruin. Instead, a pale mimicry of cities were built over them.
What remains in memory is some catastrophic Event. Something unknown that destroyed all that was built, bringing death to millions. This haunts the surviving humans of this world, making ancient tech taboo.
However, humanity had changed on this new world. The classic definition of "human" altered due to an overlay of genetic enhancements from old Earth and centuries of genetic drift within the environmental pressures of a new planetary ecosystem.
From these changes arise what are simply called The Gifted. With the added benefit of a bit of ancient tech, these Gifted have begun to affect the future of city-states, kings, and more. The haves and have-nots between Gifted and Non-gifted has created a rift, making a power shift for those that wish for the Gifted's demise.
Our story begins with the journey of some of these Gifted and not so Gifted youth, as they stumble upon the depths of their world. The result may be an awakening, a rebirth to the humanity that once was. Or, it could mean the very failure of this great experiment for Ethos. Telling the story of the end for the people of Ethos and possibly beyond.
