‎People believe that emergencies are loud. ‎They are, for the most part. Sirens blaring, people yelling, feet pounding across the floor. But sometimes, they're quiet. Sometimes it's just the sound of someone breathing too quickly, or a heart monitor that skips a beat. ‎In the emergency room, we're taught not to become attached. We concentrate on vital signs, not faces. We move from patient to patient because time doesn't wait for us to become attached. ‎I didn't think I'd notice anyone in the midst of all that craziness. I didn't think I'd remember the same set of eyes that kept popping up behind the handles of the stretcher. ‎We never met in a normal setting. ‎No coffee shops. No long walks. No casual conversations. ‎We only ever met when someone's life was at stake. ‎And somehow, that was enough for him to be the one person I could not forget.

Lindiwe Khumalo is a woman of two worlds. In the sterile, high-pressure wards of Johannesburg's busiest public hospital, she is Dr. Khumalo-a gifted surgeon who can stitch a heart back together with steady hands.
