Young Evelyn Kore lives alone with her mother, Kia Kore, in a small town by the woods. All her life her mother tells her the stories of Enoka, a mermaid who was sent away from her home to live in the woods with her younger brother after interacting with the life up above. Evelyn's home is raided, everything ripped from her grasp. She takes her mother and runs away into the woods of Enoka. Will Evelyn find her way home? Or will she die to the hands of Enoka and the spirits of her woods.

Fleeing her home village, Carnelian rescues an injured young fairy and carries him somewhere safe, never dreaming how her act of kindness might alter the entire course of her life. That 'somewhere safe' turns out to be an enchanted forest, where she is invited to remain . . . In the same place, ill-fated Sir James D'Apice learns the hard way that knights who go riding through enchanted forests ought to beware, lest they inadvertently end up somewhere they never intended on going. Are kindly Carnelian and the knight she befriends destined to be together, or will fate hold them apart?
