Paddy lost everything he was living for and that was good in him when he lost Eoin during that first jump in the desert. Ever since then, he has been spiralling down into self-destruction, trying to find his way back to Eoin. Maybe this means it's finally his stop. He'd do anything to be with him again.
Eoin didn't die in the desert. He is captured by the Italians and is placed in a prisoner of war camp. There, he uses his every waking moment to figure out how to get back to Paddy.
