I closed my eyes and licked the litmus paper. Erma was silent, watching like a hawk as I set it down on the bench. I wasn't expecting a change. I thought it'd stay blue and wet. It didn't. We watched in silence as the soft blue paper phased to violet, and then pink. That was fine. Human saliva was slightly acidic. The teacher had said so. That didn't keep us from staring at it even now. Right before Erma could say 'I told you so', I heard her shriek in horror. I looked down and felt my heart sink into my stomach. "What the composite fuck? Erma cursed raggedly, sweat beading on her forehead while she slowly lifted her gaze to meet mine. For once I had no snappy answer for that - not even in my head. Her question didn't need a comeback at all - it was more than accurate. The litmus paper had been bleached. Only strong acids could do that to litmus paper. This could only mean one thing - a realization that struck more terror in my heart than I could anticipate. For some reason, I just knew that this would change everything. Erma was staring at me, eyes wide, and lips trembling. There were no words - we didn't need any because it was plain as day and on paper.
