1.fejezet 1945 van és a német hadsereg bevonult Kisujszállásra.Ahogy a tankok elhaladtak a főút mellett egy árva ember sem maradt az utcán.Mindenki félt.A náci tankok mentek néhány száz métert majd letelepedtek.Néhány napig tartott hogy nem háborgatták város lakóit de ahogyan elfogyott az élelmük fosztogatni kezdtek.Itt jön a képbe Katalin és a családja.Katalin ekkor volt 10 éves és egy egész nagy családban élt.Volt hat testvére és néhány nagybátyja,akik szintén velük éltek.Egészen 1944-ig. ,amikor ugyanis az összes nagybátyját elküldték az oroszokkal együtt háborúba a németek ellen.De egyikük sem tért vissza élve.Visszatérve a németekre,sorra mentek be néhányan a házakba,berúgták részben az ajtót és a családok összes élelmét követelték.Ugyanígy volt Katalinnál is.Egyik nap dél körül egy német katona berontott.Nagy vágású ember volt,zöld nagy katona kabátban,sebhelyes arccal és náci kitüntetéssel a bal felső kabátzsebénél.Élelmet követelt,de a család (Katalin,az anyja és a hat testvére)megdermedt félelmében.Mikor a német katona másodjára rájuk ordibált,elkezdték elővenni a lekvárokat és a maradék kenyerüket.Mikor már mindent ki pakoltak a katona már kezdte őket felmarkolni,de ebben a pillanatban váratlan dolog történt.Jöttek az oroszok.
