Seventeen year old Penryn Byers is average in nearly every way possible. Her looks, wealth, and popularity are all on the low side. So she finds herself beyond lucky to be best friends with Dean Macentire. Dean is anything but average. His charm and devilously good looks have granted him access to the ranks of the most popular people in the school. When Dean began to be popular, Penryn believed their relationship would withstand the strain. But, at the begining of their sophomore year Dean cut off all ties to Penryn and left her in the dust. But what happens when two years later Dean comes back to her and wants another chance?

Charlie Steel was an example of an almost perfect human being. She had what everyone called a perfect life. She was beautiful, smart, rich, had a handsome husband, and two kids that seemed to be almost as perfect as her. But she's dead now, found dead in her own backyard. The police have ruled it out as a suicide. Ex-best friend, Lisa White, doesn't agree with that. She is determined to find out the truth about the death of Charlie Steel.
