Roland Dillon is a college dropout who is terminally obsessed with Agnes Holcomb, a former college classmate and unrequited love interest who had long since severed contact with him. In struggling to reconcile her beauty with the fact that he will never be with her, Dillon fakes his own death and hides himself away in remote northern Quebec, leaving behind little except an unremarkable life as a waiter and a trail of baffling clues for the people tasked with investigating his disappearance.
As his mental state rapidly declines, he passes through a series of hallucinations, many of which involving Agnes who is cast repeatedly as a supernatural figure with apocalyptic undertones. Other hallucinations involve the mysterious Dr. Rhinebeck, who alternates between being Dillon's personal therapist and the criminal psychologist investigating Dillon's disappearance.
As the hallucinations intensify in both scope and violence, he soon convinces himself that he is the president of the United States and the second coming of Jesus Christ. And yet, even through these transformations, Dillon is still frustrated by his failure to comprehend Agnes's beauty and his inability to accept that they have no future together. At the peak of Dillon's insanity and as reality itself begins to collapse, Dillon resolves to construct a doomsday weapon capable of extincting humankind.
