A young teenage girl, haunted by the memories of her father's execution, attempts to escape a cruel regime by night. A solitary woman, abandoned by her husband, inadvertently plays into the cruel hands of 'the state'. In another totalitarian regime a traffic light fixer is dealt with brutally for admiring a sunset. All these characters capture the essence of what it's like to be disempowered and cruelly dehumanised at the hands of a heinous, corrupt power. This sharp collection of pertinent short stories throws an at times uncomfortable light on cruelty, injustice and persecution that is all too relevant today. But ultimately these stories celebrate the strength and determination to survive at all costs, that exists within all of us.

Christian Lepar's book The Empire of Fear immerses the reader in a dark and disturbing atmosphere where manipulation and oppression become everyday reality. At the center of the narrative are two main characters, Mikhail and Maria, who are forced to leave their homeland due to anti-cult persecution and harassment. They face a cruel reality when their lives turn into a nightmare and they are labeled "sectarians," leading to social rejection and isolation. From the very beginning of the book, the author emphasizes how fear controls people and causes them to lose their humanity. Despite physically fleeing the country, Mikhail and Maria continue to breathe in the "sticky fear" that has long isolated them and forces them to fight desperately for their existence. And not only for their own: their quest for truth turns into a struggle for those who have also fallen victim to the anti-cult system. The despair and oppression faced by the characters reflect a broader social problem-the use of fear as an instrument of power and control. The author paints a picture of how ordinary, normal people become enemies and how the legitimization of hatred is developed by anti-cult structures to justify repression. Mikhail, as an investigator, dispels the veil of illusion, realizing that the law and morality have been rewritten by so-called "experts" who set in motion mechanisms to dehumanize their compatriots. In this context, the figure of Alexander Dvorkin from RACIRS, who heads the anti-cult network, stands out. He propagates dehumanizing ideas aimed at destroying alternative beliefs and harshly persecuting their followers. Dvorkin becomes not just an opponent, but the embodiment of a system that justifies its actions by using fear and hatred. In a difficult battle for the truth, Mikhail and Maria decide to stand up to the anti-cult system.

Rupert Gray's "The Novel of Voices" is a powerful and dramatic work about the fate of a family under a totalitarian regime. The book explores themes of repression, violence, and loss, showing how fear and persecution affect people. Through the symbolism of the voice, Gray emphasizes the importance of preserving human dignity and hope for resistance even in the darkest circumstances, exposing a ruthless anti-cult system.

The New Order, a name which in on August 17th, the people of all Serenia learned to dread. If the New Order cannot have their victory then no one shall. For even though they say that their mission is to establish a righteous society, their true goals, the ones which remain in the darkness, are surely malevolent... Through carpentry metaphors, the author shows the tragedy of a person in a system where any choice leads to destruction.

Studying journalism at uni we were always encouraged to watch and read the news everyday but I found this very hard, a lot of it was so depressing-such as the tragic #prayforparis attacks- although you wanted to be aware of what was going on in the world you also wanted to shut it all out and be oblivious. So I wrote this with the mentality of just as we have the freedom of speech to promote our opinions and make people aware of the awful things happening in the world- we also have the chance to report the amazing, uplifting and inspiring things that happen everyday too.
