Es una mirada a su intimidad, a su miedo y a la culpa que siente por quedarse callado mientras el gobierno y la apatía de la gente destruyen los libros. Lo interesante es que la historia está narrada en primera persona desde el punto de vista de uno de los libros que Faber rescata en secreto: Ensayos, de Montaigne. A través de sus ojos vemos el encierro de Faber en su sótano y cómo termina construyendo el famoso audífono verde para empezar a escuchar la resistencia.
